Where an Indian engineer can actually get a startup job abroad in 2026: twelve hubs compared on visas, pay after tax and rent, and remote-from-India hiring
For candidates in India weighing a move or a remote role: the world's main startup cities compared on how hard the visa is from India, what a senior salary is worth after tax and rent against Bengaluru, time-zone overlap with IST, dominant sectors, and how common remote-from-India hiring is — with links to the full guide for each city.

If you're in Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Pune and wondering where a startup job abroad is genuinely reachable — and whether it's worth it against what you'd earn at home — this is the comparison. Two tables: one on reachability from India, one on money. Pay levels are for a senior engineer at a funded startup, as of writing, and rough; the city guides have ranges and each has a section written for candidates applying from India.
Reachability from India
| City | Visa route from India | How hard | Remote-from-India hiring | IST overlap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dubai / Abu Dhabi | Employer visa, weeks; Golden Visa above a threshold | Easiest | Very common (the other way round too) | Near-total |
| Singapore | Employment Pass + COMPASS | Moderate; hard for junior | Very common | Near-total |
| Toronto | Global Talent Stream; Express Entry for PR | Easy, and leads to PR | Common | Evening IST |
| Berlin | EU Blue Card | Easy | Common | Afternoon IST |
| Amsterdam | Highly skilled migrant | Easy | Common | Afternoon IST |
| Stockholm | Certified-employer work permit | Easy | Common | Afternoon IST |
| London | Skilled Worker (threshold rose 2024); Young Professionals ballot under 30 | Moderate | Very common | Afternoon IST — best of the West |
| Paris | French Tech Visa | Moderate; French needed outside AI | Less common | Afternoon IST |
| Sydney | Skills in Demand; slow | Moderate | Common | Late-morning IST |
| Lisbon | D3 / Tech Visa / D8 nomad | Slow | Rare for local startups | Afternoon IST |

How to read it
Pay level is meaningless without rent and tax — and without the comparison to staying. A strong Bengaluru senior engineer earns ₹60 L–₹1 Cr; after tax and a ₹40k–₹60k rent that is a comfortable life with a high savings rate. Against that, London and Berlin come out roughly level net-after-rent, Toronto and Sydney modestly ahead, Singapore and Seattle clearly ahead, and Dubai furthest ahead because nothing is taxed. San Francisco pays double Berlin and costs triple. Convert every offer to a monthly after-tax figure in the city you'd live in — here's the method — and compare it to your Bengaluru number, not to zero.
Visa difficulty is from the perspective of a startup under fifty people deciding whether to hire you, from India. The Gulf is easiest; Canada, Germany, the Netherlands and Sweden are easy because the process is defined and cheap and they've each processed tens of thousands of Indian applicants; the UK and Singapore sit in between with salary thresholds that rule out junior roles; the US is hard because H-1B is a lottery and small companies rarely enter it — for most people the US route runs through a US degree or a large employer first. Tel Aviv and São Paulo hire locally almost by default.
Dominant sectors tell you where the depth is. If you're a security engineer, Tel Aviv has more relevant companies than the rest of the list combined; if you're in fintech, New York, London and São Paulo; if you want AI research adjacency, San Francisco, Paris, London and Toronto.
Remote norm shifted after 2023, and mostly towards the office in the US and Asia, less so in Europe. Toronto and Berlin are the cities from which working remotely for a company elsewhere is most common.
Three ways to choose
- Follow the visa. From India, start with Dubai, Toronto, Berlin, Amsterdam and Singapore; then London and Sydney; treat the US as a move you make via a degree or a large employer, or later in your career with an O-1-worthy record.
- Follow the sector. Security → Tel Aviv (remotely) or London; AI research → Paris, London, Toronto, and the US if you can get there; fintech → London, Singapore, New York; consumer → the US West Coast, remotely.
- Stay in India, take the remote job. For many people the best option is a remote role for a London, Berlin, Singapore or US company on their India band — typically ₹50 L–₹1.5 Cr for senior engineers, paid into India, with your family, your cost base and no visa. The /remote view of the ranking lists exactly those roles. Read how remote pay bands and contracts work first, and check the time-zone overlap column above before anything else.
