Startup jobs in Los Angeles: aerospace, consumer, media tech and the sprawl you have to plan around

Los Angeles is a large startup market that doesn't behave like one, because it is really four or five clusters an hour apart by car. Consumer and media startups on the Westside; aerospace and hardware in El Segundo and the South Bay; gaming and entertainment tech around Culver City and Burbank; a growing downtown scene; and Pasadena's Caltech and JPL orbit for deep tech. Ask where the office is before anything else.

Where the startups are

Santa Monica, Venice and Playa Vista ("Silicon Beach"). Consumer apps, media, e-commerce, and the larger funded companies (Snap in Santa Monica set the tone).

Culver City. Streaming and entertainment tech (Apple, Amazon and HBO have large offices), gaming, and the startups that serve the studios.

El Segundo and the South Bay. Aerospace and defence tech — SpaceX in Hawthorne, and a dense cluster of space, hardware and dual-use startups that has grown fast since 2020.

Downtown and the Arts District. Fintech, proptech, fashion tech, and a younger scene with cheaper space.

Pasadena. Caltech and JPL spinouts: robotics, space, materials, and AI research.

What's hiring

Consumer and creator-economy products, media and streaming technology, gaming, e-commerce and fashion tech, aerospace and defence (the fastest-growing sector), health and wellness, and AI applied to entertainment. Engineering is the largest category but LA has proportionally more product, design, marketing and creative-technology roles than other cities, because the customers are studios, brands and creators.

Pay and cost

As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly $160k–$215k base; mid-level $125k–$165k — a step below the Bay Area, with the same California income tax and pay-transparency rules. Aerospace and hardware pay somewhat less on base than software. Rent for a one-bedroom on the Westside runs $2,500–$3,300; less east and south. The car and the commute are a real cost — an hour each way is normal if you don't live near the office.

Equity follows US norms; consumer companies here have had a mixed decade of outcomes, so value grants soberly.

Visa reality

As across the US: startups rarely sponsor H-1Bs; O-1 is a real route and is unusually common in LA because the "extraordinary ability" category was built for the entertainment industry and its lawyers know it well; TN for Canadians and Mexicans. Aerospace and defence companies typically require US citizenship or permanent residence for export-control reasons — check before applying.

How hiring works here

Relationship-driven and less structured than the Bay Area; founders here come from entertainment and consumer brands as often as from engineering. Two to three weeks. The venture firms (Upfront, Fifth Wall, Bonfire, and the coastal firms' LA partners), the university networks (UCLA, USC, Caltech) and the aerospace community are the networks; Built In LA and dot.LA cover the scene. Hybrid is standard; fully remote is common at software companies and impossible at hardware ones.

The honest picture

The best US city for consumer, media and creator products, and now the best for space and defence hardware; a middling one for enterprise software and AI research. Live near the office or spend your life on the 405.

If you're applying from India

Getting there. Standard US immigration constraints apply, with one LA-specific twist: the O-1 "extraordinary ability" visa was built for the entertainment industry, and LA immigration lawyers process more of them than anywhere — useful if you have a track record. Aerospace and defence roles (the fastest-growing sector) generally require US citizenship or permanent residence for export-control reasons, which rules them out for most candidates from India.

Remote from India. Common at consumer, media and gaming companies; Pacific core hours are 9:30 pm–1:30 am IST.

Pay in context. A $185k salary nets about $125k after federal and California tax; Westside rent is $2,500–$3,300 and a car is not optional. LA is a good target for product, design, growth and creative-technology roles — categories where it hires proportionally more than other US cities — and for consumer engineering. Less so for enterprise or AI research.
