Startup jobs in Boston and Cambridge: biotech, robotics, enterprise software and the university pipeline

Boston is the largest life-sciences cluster in the world and a top-five US software market, and the two barely overlap. Kendall Square in Cambridge holds more biotech companies per block than anywhere on earth; the Seaport and downtown hold the software and fintech companies; the universities — MIT, Harvard, and a dozen others — feed both. If you're in software, read the software section and skip the biotech one; if you're a scientist, the reverse.

Where the startups are

Kendall Square, Cambridge. Biotech, pharma R&D, and the deep-tech and AI spinouts from MIT; the Cambridge Innovation Center and LabCentral for the earliest-stage companies.

The Seaport. Software, fintech, and the larger scale-ups (and the offices of the venture firms that moved from Route 128).

Downtown and the Financial District. Fintech, insurtech (Boston is an insurance city), and enterprise software.

Somerville and Allston. Cheaper space; robotics and hardware around Greentown Labs and the Harvard engineering campus.

Route 128 and the suburbs. The older enterprise and hardware companies, and the robotics cluster around Boston Dynamics and iRobot's orbit.

What's hiring

Software: enterprise SaaS, security, fintech and insurtech, healthcare IT (the hospital systems are the customers), edtech, and AI applied to all of the above. Life sciences: every stage of biotech from platform companies to clinical-stage, plus the software and data companies serving them (computational biology, lab automation, clinical-trial software). Deep tech: robotics, materials, energy and fusion, quantum — the MIT spinout economy.

Pay and cost

As of writing, senior software engineers at funded startups earn roughly $160k–$210k base; mid-level $120k–$160k. Biotech pays scientists well by academic standards and modestly by software standards; computational roles at the intersection pay software rates. Massachusetts requires salary ranges in postings under a 2025 law. Rent for a one-bedroom in Cambridge or the Seaport runs $2,800–$3,600; the state income tax is a flat rate plus a surtax on high incomes.

Equity: software startups follow the standard option model. Biotech equity is different — larger grants, much longer timelines, and outcomes tied to clinical milestones rather than revenue.

Visa reality

Universities and hospitals sponsor freely (cap-exempt H-1Bs), which is why Boston has so many international researchers; startups face the usual lottery problem, but the O-1 route is unusually well-trodden here because so many candidates have publications and patents. Biotech companies sponsor more readily than software startups.

How hiring works here

More academic in tone than other cities — expect to talk about what you've published or built in depth, and expect references to be checked properly. Two to four weeks. The MIT and Harvard networks, MassChallenge, the Cambridge Innovation Center and Greentown Labs are the hubs; the venture firms (General Catalyst, Bessemer's Boston office, Flagship for biotech) are visible. Hybrid is standard in software; lab roles are in person by nature.

The honest picture

The best city in the world for biotech and one of the best for robotics and deep tech; a solid, unglamorous software market with real enterprise customers and less hype than the coasts. Winters and rent are the tax.

If you're applying from India

Getting there. Boston's universities and hospitals are cap-exempt H-1B sponsors, so the classic route is a US master's or PhD here followed by a research or engineering role; a large share of the biotech and AI research workforce arrived that way. Startups sponsor less readily, but the O-1 route is well-trodden because so many candidates have publications and patents. Indian students are the largest international group at the local universities.

Remote from India. Common for software roles; rare for lab and hardware roles by nature. Eastern core hours are 7:30 pm–11:30 pm IST.

Pay in context. A $185k salary nets roughly $130k after federal and Massachusetts tax; Cambridge rent is $2,800–$3,600. Net-after-rent is roughly level with Seattle and Austin on lower gross. Boston is the right target for computational biology, robotics and research-adjacent engineering — fields where Bengaluru and Hyderabad have fewer comparable companies.
