Startup jobs in Sydney and Melbourne: Australia's startup market, from Atlassian and Canva to what's hiring now
Finding a startup job in Sydney (and Melbourne) — where companies cluster, the fintech and SaaS sectors that hire, realistic salaries in Australian dollars, superannuation and contracts, the Skills in Demand and working-holiday visa routes, and how hiring works. With a section for candidates applying from India: the visa route, pay against Bengaluru after tax and rent, and whether remote-from-India hiring is common.

Australia's startup scene is smaller than its economy would suggest and larger than most people abroad realise, anchored by two global software companies — Atlassian and Canva — and a fintech cluster built on the country's high bank and payment-card penetration. Sydney is the larger market; Melbourne is close behind and cheaper.
Where the startups are
Surry Hills and Darlinghurst. Sydney's startup heartland: coworking, seed and Series A companies, and the cafés where the community meets.
The CBD and Barangaroo. Fintech, the larger scale-ups, the venture firms, and the Australian offices of US tech companies.
Tech Central (Haymarket–Ultimo–Eveleigh). A government-designated precinct around Atlassian's new headquarters, UTS and Sydney University; deep tech and AI spinouts alongside larger companies.
Melbourne. Cremorne ("Silicon Yarra") holds the densest cluster — Carsales, REA, Seek, and many startups — with the CBD and Collingwood close behind. Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth have smaller scenes.
What's hiring
Fintech (payments, lending, wealth, the buy-now-pay-later sector's descendants), B2B SaaS, health tech, proptech, climate and energy (Australia's grid transition is a large market), agtech, and a growing AI cluster. Engineering is the largest category; product, design and customer roles are strong at the SaaS companies. Many Australian startups sell primarily to the US and UK and structure their sales teams accordingly.
Pay and contracts
Salaries are quoted annual, gross, and usually excluding superannuation — check, because "A$150k plus super" and "A$150k inclusive" differ by about 12%. As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly A$150k–A$200k plus super; mid-level A$110k–A$150k; product and design similar. Superannuation is a mandatory employer pension contribution (12% from July 2025) paid into a fund you choose; it is a real part of your pay.
Contracts: four weeks' leave is statutory; notice is typically four weeks; probation six months. Australian employment law is protective, with unfair-dismissal rules that apply after the probation period at most companies.
Equity is options under an Employee Share Scheme; startup-friendly tax rules allow deferral of tax to sale for eligible companies. Ask the standard questions.
Visa routes
The Skills in Demand visa (which replaced the Temporary Skill Shortage visa in late 2024) is employer-sponsored, with a core stream for occupations above a salary threshold — most tech roles qualify — and a path to permanent residence. Startups need to be approved sponsors, which funded companies generally are. The Working Holiday visa covers under-30s (under-35s from some countries) for a year or two and is a common way to arrive and convert. The Global Talent visa targets people with a strong track record in target sectors. Processing is defined but slower than Canada's.
How hiring works here
Friendly, thorough and slower than the US: two to five weeks with a take-home or a pairing session and a founder meeting. LinkedIn and Seek are the mass channels; the startup boards (Wellfound, local ones), the venture firms and the Startmate, Blackbird and Airtree networks are where startup roles surface. Hybrid two to three days is standard; fully remote within Australia is common. Hiring pauses from mid-December to late January.
Practical notes
A one-bedroom in inner Sydney runs A$650–A$900 a week (rent is quoted weekly); Melbourne about 20% less. The time zone is the real trade-off: overlap with the US West Coast is early morning, with Europe late evening, which shapes which remote roles are possible from here.
If you're applying from India
Getting there. Australia is a practical, if slower, move. The Skills in Demand visa is employer-sponsored with a path to permanent residence; most tech roles are on the occupation list and funded startups are approved sponsors. Indian nationals are the largest source of skilled migrants to Australia, and Australian master's degrees lead to a post-study work visa. Processing is measured in months, not weeks, and the cost of living is high.
Remote from India. Common at Sydney and Melbourne SaaS companies — Atlassian and Canva both have large Indian engineering presences — and the time zone works: Sydney is 4.5–5.5 hours ahead of IST, so their afternoon is your late morning.
Pay in context. A A$180k package (including 12% super) nets roughly A$118k in hand plus the superannuation; Sydney rent is A$650–A$900 a week. Net-after-rent is above a Bengaluru senior salary; the superannuation and permanent-residence path are the long-term draws. Melbourne is 20% cheaper for similar pay.
