Startup jobs in Berlin: Europe's cheapest big startup city, and what has changed since the boom
Finding a startup job in Berlin — the Kreuzberg-to-Mitte startup belt, the sectors that hire, realistic salaries in euros, how German employment contracts and probation work, the EU Blue Card route, and how the city has changed since 2021. With a section for candidates applying from India: the visa route, pay against Bengaluru after tax and rent, and whether remote-from-India hiring is common.

Berlin was Europe's fashionable startup city for a decade — cheap, English-speaking, creative, funded. The rents have risen and the 2022–23 downturn hit its consumer companies hard, but it remains the largest German ecosystem, the most international, and still noticeably cheaper than London, Paris or Amsterdam.
Where the startups are
Kreuzberg and Neukölln. The dense, younger end: seed-stage companies, coworking spaces, and the offices along the Landwehrkanal and around Moritzplatz.
Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg. The larger, better-funded companies and the venture firms; Factory Berlin, Rosenthaler Platz, Torstraße.
Friedrichshain. Media, gaming and creative tech around the East Side and Warschauer Straße.
Charlottenburg and the west. Fewer startups, more corporates and the hardware/deep-tech companies near the Technical University.
What's hiring
Berlin's large companies — Zalando, Delivery Hero, HelloFresh, N26, Trade Republic, GetYourGuide — set the tone, and many of the city's startups were founded by their alumni. Currently hiring: fintech and insurtech, B2B SaaS, climate and energy (Germany's industrial base is the customer), mobility, health tech, and a fast-growing AI cluster. Consumer marketplaces, the city's old speciality, are quieter. Berlin is also where many US companies put their first EU engineering office.
Pay and how contracts work
As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly €80k–€110k; mid-level €60k–€80k; product and design similar or slightly lower. Sales roles quote a lower base with commission on top. Salaries are quoted annual and gross; ask whether it's paid over twelve or thirteen months.
German employment contracts are protective and slow-moving. Six months' probation (Probezeit) with two weeks' notice is standard; after it, notice periods are typically one to three months and increase with tenure. Unlimited (unbefristet) contracts are the norm at funded startups; fixed-term ones are a flag. Thirty days' leave, statutory health insurance deducted from gross (or private above an income threshold), and pension contributions are all built in. Net pay is roughly 55–60% of gross for a single person on a startup salary.
Equity in Germany was historically awkward — virtual stock options (VSOPs) rather than real options, taxed as income at exit — but reforms in 2024 improved the tax treatment of genuine employee shares at startups. Ask which instrument the company uses and read how equity works.
Visa routes
For non-EU citizens, the EU Blue Card is the main path: a job offer above a salary threshold (lower for shortage occupations including IT) and a degree, or for IT specialists, three years' experience without a degree. It is a defined process the company doesn't have to "sponsor" in the UK sense, which is why Berlin startups hire internationally so freely. The Chancenkarte (opportunity card) lets qualified people come to look for work for up to a year. Registering your address (Anmeldung) is the first bureaucratic hurdle — book the appointment before you land.
How hiring works here
English is the working language at nearly every funded startup; German is a plus for sales and for anything selling to Mittelstand customers. LinkedIn, Wellfound and the local boards (Berlin Startup Jobs, the Factory network) plus Xing for German-speaking roles. Loops are two to four weeks with a take-home common. Remote within Germany or the EU is widely offered; many Berlin startups have been remote-friendly since before 2020.
What's changed since the boom
Fewer consumer companies, more B2B and climate; more rigour on runway; slower hiring and tougher interviews than 2021. The upside for candidates: the companies still hiring are the ones with real businesses, and the city is still affordable relative to its peers — a one-bedroom in a central district runs €1,300–€1,800, though finding one is the hard part.
If you're applying from India
Getting there. Germany is the easiest large European country for an Indian engineer to move to. The EU Blue Card needs a job offer above a salary threshold (lower for IT) and a degree — or, since 2024, three years' IT experience without one — and takes weeks, not months. The Chancenkarte lets you come and look for work for up to a year. Permanent residence is available after as little as 21 months with German language skills, or 27 without. Indian passport holders are the largest Blue Card group in Germany; companies here know the process cold.
Remote from India. Common at Berlin startups, which were remote-friendly before the pandemic; IST overlap is easy (Berlin core hours are 1:30–7:30 pm IST). EOR hiring into India is routine.
Pay in context. A €95k salary nets roughly €57k for a single person; Berlin rent is €1,300–€1,800 for a one-bedroom. Net-after-rent lands somewhat above a strong Bengaluru senior salary, with 30 days' leave, health insurance and a pension built in. English is enough at nearly every funded startup; German matters for daily life and for permanent residence.
