Startup jobs in Singapore: Southeast Asia's headquarters city, the Employment Pass, and what to expect
A guide to startup jobs in Singapore — why regional headquarters cluster here, the sectors that hire, realistic salaries in Singapore dollars, the Employment Pass and its salary thresholds, and how the city's compact, fast hiring culture works. With a section for candidates applying from India: the visa route, pay against Bengaluru after tax and rent, and whether remote-from-India hiring is common.

Singapore is the base from which startups address Southeast Asia's 650 million people. The customers are in Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, Bangkok and Manila; the headquarters, the funding, the regulators and the senior roles are here. That shapes what jobs exist: proportionally more leadership, product, finance and regional roles, and engineering teams that are often split between Singapore and a lower-cost hub.
Where the startups are
The CBD and Tanjong Pagar. Fintech, larger scale-ups and the venture firms; walkable to the government's regulatory bodies whose licences many of them hold.
One-North and Buona Vista. The research and deep-tech cluster: biotech, AI research, and the Block 71 startup community founded around the university.
Kallang, Lavender and the east. Cheaper space, coworking, seed-stage teams, and the offices of gaming and consumer companies.
Punggol Digital District. New, government-planned, filling up with tech companies.
What's hiring
Fintech — payments, cross-border remittance, lending, wealth, and crypto under the Monetary Authority's licensing regime — is the largest sector. Then B2B SaaS selling into the region, logistics and supply chain, health tech, climate and carbon-market tech, gaming, and AI. The large companies — Grab, Sea, Carousell, Shopback, Ninja Van — and the regional offices of Google, Meta, ByteDance and the Chinese tech firms set salary benchmarks and produce many of the city's founders.
Pay and contracts
As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly S$120k–S$180k; mid-level S$85k–S$120k; product managers similar; a thirteenth-month "AWS" bonus is common. Income tax is low and progressive — a startup salary nets roughly 85–90% of gross — with CPF contributions applying to citizens and permanent residents but not to Employment Pass holders. Notice periods are one to three months; probation three to six months; leave 14–20 days at startups.
Equity is usually options under a plan modelled on US practice; there is no special tax regime, and gains on shares are generally not taxed as capital gains. Ask the standard questions from how equity works.
Visa routes
The Employment Pass (EP) is the standard work visa for professionals. It has a minimum monthly salary that rises with age and has been increased several times since 2020, plus since 2023 a points-based COMPASS framework that scores salary, qualifications, workforce diversity and the company's local-hiring record. Well-funded startups clear it readily; very small ones sometimes can't for junior roles. The ONE Pass is for high earners and doesn't tie you to one employer. The Tech.Pass exists for senior tech leaders. Ask which pass the company would apply for and whether its COMPASS position is comfortable.
How hiring works here
Fast and compact. The ecosystem is small enough that everyone is one introduction away; NodeFlair, LinkedIn, Glints and the Block 71 and venture networks are the channels. Loops take two to three weeks. In-office norms are stronger than in Europe — hybrid with three or more days in office is typical — and remote hiring from Singapore usually means hiring into Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia or India, not the reverse.
Practical notes
Rent is the cost that bites: a one-bedroom in a central condominium runs S$3,500–S$5,000, and a room in a shared flat S$1,200–S$2,000. Everything else — transport, food, healthcare — is efficient and reasonable. The trade-off Singapore offers is regional scope and a stable base against a high cost of living and a job market that is deep at the senior end and thinner in the middle.
If you're applying from India
Getting there. Singapore is the nearest major hub — 2.5 hours ahead of IST, a five-hour flight — and the largest employer of Indian tech professionals outside India and the US. The Employment Pass needs a salary above a threshold that rises with age, and since 2023 the COMPASS points test, which scores the company's nationality diversity and local-hiring share as well as your salary and degree. In practice: well-funded companies clear it for mid-level and senior roles; the threshold makes junior roles from India hard. Ask which pass and whether the company's COMPASS position is comfortable.
Remote from India. Very common — Singapore-headquartered companies routinely keep engineering in Bengaluru, Chennai or Hyderabad, and the time-zone overlap is nearly total.
Pay in context. A S$150k salary nets roughly S$130k (tax is low and EP holders don't pay CPF); a one-bedroom is S$3,500–S$5,000. Net-after-rent is well above Bengaluru for senior roles; the cost of living beyond rent is moderate. There is no equity tax regime to worry about, and the Indian community is large.
