Startup jobs in Stockholm: the city behind Spotify, Klarna and a decade of unicorns, and what it takes to work there
A guide to startup jobs in Stockholm — where companies cluster from Södermalm to Kista, the fintech, gaming and climate sectors that hire, what pay looks like against Swedish tax and benefits, the qualified stock option scheme, the work-permit route, and how Swedish hiring culture works. With a section for candidates applying from India: the visa route, pay against Bengaluru after tax and rent, and whether remote-from-India hiring is common.

Stockholm has produced more billion-dollar technology companies per person than any city outside Silicon Valley — Spotify, Klarna, King, Mojang, iZettle, Northvolt — and its startup scene is correspondingly mature: experienced operators, second-time founders, and a strong venture base. It is also a city where pay looks modest next to London until you count what the tax buys.
Where the startups are
Södermalm. The startup heartland: coworking (Epicenter, SUP46's successors), seed-stage companies, and Spotify's cultural gravity nearby.
Norrmalm and Vasastan. Fintech, the scale-ups, and the venture firms (EQT Ventures, Creandum, Northzone all sit in the city centre).
Kista. The old telecoms cluster north of the city (Ericsson); hardware, 5G, and deep-tech startups.
Uppsala (40 minutes north) for life sciences; Gothenburg for automotive and mobility (Volvo, Polestar, and their startup fringe).
What's hiring
Fintech and payments (Klarna's alumni have founded much of the sector), music and media tech, gaming (King, Mojang, Paradox, Embracer and the studios spun out of them), climate and energy (Northvolt's rise and troubles both shaped a battery and grid-tech cluster), health tech, and B2B SaaS. AI is growing on top of a strong research base at KTH. Engineering and product dominate postings; Stockholm companies often keep sales in London or the US.
Pay, tax and what you get for it
As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly SEK 65k–90k a month gross (salaries are quoted monthly); mid-level SEK 50k–65k. Income tax and municipal tax take roughly 30–35% at these levels, and employer social contributions (about 31%, invisible to you) fund a system that returns a great deal: 480 days of parental leave per child, heavily subsidised childcare, healthcare, and five to six weeks' leave. Net pay is lower than London; disposable income after childcare and healthcare is often higher.
Notice periods are one to three months; probation six months. Collective agreements (kollektivavtal) cover many companies and set pension and insurance terms.
Equity: Sweden's qualified employee stock option (QESO / kvalificerade personaloptioner) scheme, expanded in 2022, lets eligible startups grant options taxed only at sale as capital gains. Ask whether the grant is under it; the general equity questions apply.
Visa routes
Non-EU citizens need a work permit, applied for by the employer after the offer; certified employers get fast-track processing in weeks, and most funded startups are certified or use a certified agent. A salary threshold applies. The EU Blue Card is an alternative for high earners with a degree. Registering with the tax agency for a personal number is the gateway to everything else — bank account, healthcare, apartment queue.
How hiring works here
Consensus-driven and flat: expect to meet several future colleagues, and expect decisions to take a couple of weeks longer than in London. English is the working language at nearly all funded startups; Swedish is a plus for domestic-facing roles. LinkedIn and The Hub (the Nordic startup board) are the channels; the venture firms and the Spotify/Klarna alumni networks are the introductions. Hybrid is standard; Sweden's summer (late June to mid-August) is a hiring dead zone.
Practical notes
Housing is the hard part: the rental market is queue-based and sublets (andrahand) are the realistic route for newcomers — budget SEK 14k–20k a month for a one-bedroom sublet. Winters are dark; summers are extraordinary.
If you're applying from India
Getting there. Sweden's work permit is employer-led and certified employers get it processed in weeks; most funded Stockholm startups qualify. India is one of Sweden's largest sources of work-permit holders, mostly in IT. The permit ties you to a job for the first two years; permanent residence is possible after four. Registering for a personal number on arrival is the gate to everything else.
Remote from India. Common at Stockholm SaaS and fintech companies, several of which have Indian engineering teams; Stockholm core hours are 1:30–7:30 pm IST.
Pay in context. SEK 80k a month is about ₹75 L a year gross; net is roughly 68% of that, and a sublet one-bedroom is SEK 14k–20k a month. Net-after-rent is comparable to a strong Bengaluru senior salary — the difference is what the tax buys: 480 days of parental leave, nearly free childcare, healthcare, and six weeks' leave. Stockholm makes most sense for people planning a family.
