Austin's pitch through the early 2020s was simple: Bay Area companies, Texas taxes, and a city people wanted to live in. Oracle, Tesla and a wave of venture firms moved headquarters or offices here, and startup formation followed. The boom has cooled — rents peaked in 2022 and have fallen since — but what's left is a real, mid-sized ecosystem with a strong enterprise and hardware bent.
Where the startups are
Downtown and the Rainey Street district. Coworking, venture offices, and the funded startups that took tower space during the boom.
East Austin. The younger, cheaper end: seed-stage teams, creative and consumer companies, and most of the meetups.
The Domain and North Austin. The corporate campuses (Apple, Amazon, Indeed, Oracle's earlier office) and enterprise startups near them.
South Congress and South Austin. A spread of smaller companies; Tesla's Giga Texas to the southeast has pulled hardware and energy startups toward it.
What's hiring
Enterprise software and infrastructure (Austin is where many Bay Area B2B companies put a second office), fintech, healthcare IT (Dell Medical School and the hospital systems as customers), hardware and semiconductors (Samsung, NXP, AMD and a startup fringe), energy and climate, and consumer products. Sales and customer-success roles are a larger share here than in the Bay Area, because so many companies moved their go-to-market teams to Texas.
Pay and cost
As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly $150k–$200k base; mid-level $115k–$150k; the gap to the Bay Area is 15–25% on base and larger on equity. Texas has no state income tax, which recovers a good part of that gap: a $170k salary in Austin nets close to what $195k does in San Francisco. Rent for a one-bedroom downtown runs $1,600–$2,200, well down from the 2022 peak. Property tax is high if you buy.

Visa reality
The same as everywhere in the US: H-1B is a lottery and small companies rarely enter it; O-1 for people with a track record; TN for Canadians and Mexicans. The large corporate offices sponsor; the startups mostly don't. UT Austin's international graduates on OPT are a significant share of junior hires.
How hiring works here
Friendlier and slightly slower than the Bay Area; two to three weeks with a take-home or pairing session. Capital Factory is the ecosystem's hub; the Austin Technology Council, the university, and the venture firms (LiveOak, S3, Silverton, plus the coastal firms with Austin partners) are the networks. LinkedIn and Wellfound are the boards; Built In Austin is a local one. Hybrid is standard; fully remote within the US is common because so many Austin companies were built distributed.
The honest picture
Austin is a good place to work at a Series A–C enterprise company, a strong place for sales and customer roles, and a fine place to work remotely for a coastal company. It is not the place for the deepest AI research scene or the largest equity grants. The trade is lifestyle and net pay for ceiling.
If you're applying from India
Getting there. The same US immigration picture as everywhere: a US degree and OPT (UT Austin has a large Indian graduate population), an H-1B transfer from a larger employer, or O-1. Austin's big corporate offices — Apple, Amazon, Oracle, Dell, and the Indian IT firms' Texas operations — sponsor at scale and are a common route into the city's startups later.
Remote from India. Common: Austin's enterprise and SaaS startups were built distributed, and Central time core hours are 8:30 pm–12:30 am IST — hard but more workable than the Pacific coast.
Pay in context. A $175k salary in Texas nets about $130k with no state income tax, and Austin rent has fallen to $1,600–$2,200. That's the best net-after-rent of any US city in this series for the pay level; the trade is smaller equity grants and a less deep engineering scene than the coasts.
