Startup jobs in Seattle: cloud, AI and the startups built by Amazon and Microsoft alumni

Seattle's startup scene lives in the shadow of two of the largest technology companies on earth, and that is both its constraint and its strength. Amazon and Microsoft absorb enormous amounts of talent and set pay; their alumni found a disproportionate number of the region's startups, most of them in cloud infrastructure, developer tools, enterprise software and, since 2023, AI.

Where the startups are

South Lake Union. Amazon's campus and the startups and venture firms around it; the densest cluster.

Downtown, Pioneer Square and Belltown. Coworking, seed-stage companies, and the older software companies.

Fremont and Ballard. Smaller companies, hardware, and the Google and Adobe offices that seeded a cluster.

Bellevue and Redmond (the Eastside). Microsoft, a growing set of enterprise and AI startups, and the offices of companies that want Eastside talent without the commute across the lake.

What's hiring

Cloud infrastructure and developer tools above all — Seattle is where a large share of the world's cloud engineers already are. Then AI (the Allen Institute for AI and the University of Washington produce a strong research pipeline; several notable AI companies are Seattle-founded), enterprise SaaS, security, healthcare and biotech (Fred Hutch and the UW medical system), space and aerospace (Blue Origin, SpaceX's Starlink office, and a startup fringe), and gaming.

Pay and cost

Pay is second only to the Bay Area and New York because the giants set the benchmark. As of writing, senior engineers at funded startups earn roughly $170k–$230k base; mid-level $130k–$175k. Washington has no state income tax, which makes Seattle net pay close to Bay Area levels for lower rent: a one-bedroom in central neighbourhoods runs $1,900–$2,600. Washington's pay-transparency law requires ranges in postings.

Equity and vesting follow US norms — how it works. One Seattle-specific point: many startup employees arrive from Amazon or Microsoft with unvested RSUs, and startups here are used to negotiating signing payments to offset them.

Visa reality

The giants sponsor H-1Bs at scale and Seattle has one of the largest H-1B populations in the country; startups mostly don't, but H-1B transfers from a big company to a startup are common and don't need the lottery. That makes Seattle unusually workable for international candidates who start at Amazon or Microsoft and move to a startup later. O-1 and TN as elsewhere.

How hiring works here

Structured — the big-company interview culture bleeds into startups, so expect system design and coding rounds even at small companies. Two to three weeks. Madrona, Pioneer Square Labs, Flying Fish and the UW and AI2 networks are the ecosystem's connective tissue; GeekWire covers it closely and its job board is a useful local channel. Hybrid is the norm; Amazon's return-to-office push has made fully remote less common in the region than it was.

The honest picture

Seattle is the best city in the US for infrastructure and cloud engineers who want startup risk with big-company pay nearby as a fallback. The consumer and fintech scenes are thin; the AI scene is real and growing; the weather is what people say it is.

If you're applying from India

Getting there. Seattle is arguably the most workable US city for Indian engineers, because Amazon and Microsoft sponsor H-1Bs in enormous numbers and both hire directly from Indian campuses and Indian offices via intra-company transfer (L-1). Once you're in the US on an H-1B, moving to a startup is a transfer, not a lottery. The Indian community in the Eastside suburbs is one of the largest in the country.

Remote from India. Very common — Seattle's cloud and infrastructure startups are staffed by people who spent years working with Indian teams, and many keep engineering in Hyderabad or Bengaluru. Pacific core hours are 9:30 pm–1:30 am IST, the hardest overlap.

Pay in context. A $200k salary in Washington nets about $150k with no state income tax; a one-bedroom is $1,900–$2,600. Net-after-rent is the highest in the US for the seniority, and startup offers here are benchmarked against Amazon and Microsoft, which keeps them honest.
