Writing a job description for a remote role in India

"Remote" in a job title attracts three times the applicants and, if the posting is vague, three times the mismatches. Be precise.

Say which kind of remote

• Remote-first, anywhere in India.
• Remote within India, with occasional travel (say how often).
• Hybrid with a base city (say how many days and where).

Job boards, including this one, filter on this distinction; getting it wrong wastes everyone's time.

Hours and overlap

State the core hours you need people online in IST and whether the role serves customers or teams in other timezones. "Overlap 10:00–16:00 IST; occasional US-evening calls" is a sentence that will save you a dozen screens.

Equipment, stipend, travel

Laptop provided or not; internet or coworking stipend; how often the team meets in person and who pays. Candidates leaving offices ask these in the first call.

Pay

Say whether you pay a single national band or adjust by location. A stated range matters even more for remote roles, because candidates in Indore and Bengaluru are reading the same posting with different numbers in mind.

What to screen for

Remote hiring is hiring for writing and self-direction. Ask for a written sample — a design doc, a postmortem, a README — instead of a fourth interview round. In the loop, run at least one async exercise and judge the communication, not just the output.
