Views, clicks, applicants: the hiring funnel metrics startups should actually track
How to read a job listing's funnel — impressions, views, apply clicks, applications, screens, offers — what each drop-off tells you, and how to fix it.

A job posting is a funnel. Treat it like one and most hiring problems become obvious.
The stages
- Views — people who opened the listing.
- Apply clicks — people who clicked through to your application page.
- Applications — people who completed your form.
- Screens — people you talked to.
- Offers and accepts.
Every listing on this board shows real views and apply clicks, counted server-side with bots and datacenter traffic filtered out and deduplicated by session. They're small numbers, and they're true.
What each drop-off means
- Views but few apply clicks: the posting isn't convincing. Title, first paragraph, salary range, location. Fix the JD.
- Clicks but few applications: your application form is too long, asks for a login, or breaks on mobile. Test it yourself on a phone.
- Applications but few worth screening: requirements are vague or the range is missing, so the wrong people apply. Tighten must-haves; state pay.
- Screens but few offers: your loop is too slow or your bar is miscalibrated for the pay. Compare with what similar roles state on the board.
- Offers but few accepts: money, notice-period friction, or a competing offer you didn't know about. Ask every decline why.
Benchmarks, honestly
Apply-click rates on a good listing are commonly in the single digits to low teens as a percentage of views; application completion depends almost entirely on your form. Don't chase industry averages; chase week-over-week improvement on your own numbers.
Where position matters
On a ranked board, most views go to the top few positions. If your listing's views fall off as it slips down, a re-boost restores them; if views hold but clicks don't, the posting needs work, not money.
