Moving from a services company to a startup in India: what changes and how to make the jump

Every year a large number of engineers move from services companies to product startups. The ones who succeed reframe rather than apologise.

What actually changes

Ownership: you'll own a feature or a metric end to end, not a ticket. Pace: weekly releases, not quarterly. Ambiguity: the spec is a Slack message. Feedback: from users and metrics within days. Pay: usually higher fixed pay for the same years of experience, plus ESOPs — but variable is less guaranteed.

What startups screen for

Evidence that you've built something without being told exactly how. That can come from a side project with real users, an open-source contribution, an internal tool you pushed through, or a client engagement where you made the calls. One concrete example beats five certifications.

Reframing your CV

Replace "worked on module X for client Y" with what you decided, what you shipped, and what happened. Quantify where honest. Cut technologies you touched once. Add a link to code, a demo or a write-up. Keep it to one page under five years' experience.

The interview gap

Startup coding rounds are usually practical (build a small thing, debug a real thing) rather than puzzle-heavy, but system-design and take-home rounds expect you to make and defend choices. Practise explaining trade-offs out loud.

Notice period

Your 90-day notice is the biggest obstacle. Read notice periods at startups; start the early-release conversation before you get an offer, not after.

Where to look

Series A–B startups hire the most people from services backgrounds because they need specialists with solid fundamentals. The engineering guide and the live board are the places to start.
