How to get a software engineering job at an Indian startup

How to get a software engineering job at an Indian startup — what the role really involves, how the interview loop works, how pay is structured, and where the open roles are right now.

Engineering is the category Indian startups hire for most, and the one where the gap between a good and a great candidate shows up fastest — in pay, in how quickly you're hired, and in what you get to work on.

What startups actually look for

Early and growth-stage startups rarely hire for a single language. They hire people who can ship a feature end to end: read a vague requirement, design the data model, write the API, wire the UI, deploy it, and watch the metrics. Titles like "Member of Technical Staff", "Full-stack Engineer" or "Founding Engineer" are code for this.

Depth still matters at senior levels. Staff and principal roles at companies like Sarvam AI, Zeta or Atlan are about distributed systems, data platforms, reliability and security — not breadth.

The interview loop

A typical Indian startup loop in 2026 is: a recruiter or founder screen (20–30 minutes), one or two technical rounds (a coding exercise or a take-home, then a system design or code-walkthrough discussion), a hiring-manager round, and sometimes a culture or founder conversation. Total elapsed time is usually one to three weeks; if a company takes longer than a month, that tells you something about how they operate.

Two things reliably help: bring real work to the walkthrough (a repo, a deployed project, a postmortem you wrote) and ask concrete questions about deploy frequency, on-call, and how decisions get made.

Reading the posting

  • Stack listed in detail — the team knows what it needs. Good sign.
  • "Rockstar", "ninja", "10x" — the team doesn't know what it needs. Ask more questions.
  • Salary range stated — the company has a levelling framework. Rarer than it should be; featured roles on this board are required to show one.
  • "Founding engineer" with equity but low fixed pay — legitimate at pre-seed, less so once the company has raised a Series A. Check the funding stage.

Pay

Fixed pay for engineers varies enormously by stage, city and level — a funded Bengaluru fintech pays differently from a bootstrapped Pune SaaS company for the same title. Don't benchmark on titles; benchmark on scope. The roles on the board that state a range give you real reference points; the weekly report tracks the median stated range across all open roles.
