🎯 Arrow Focus

How well you block out distractions. About 1 minute.

Which way does the middle arrow point? Ignore the others.

About 1 minute. The first 4 rows are practice and don't count. Then you get 45 seconds.

Why does this happen?

Your eyes take in the whole row at once, not just the arrow you care about. When the arrows around it point the other way, they nudge your brain towards the wrong answer.

Blocking them out takes a little extra time, a few hundredths of a second, and now and then they get their way and you tap the wrong side.

Scientists call this the flanker effect. It's a classic way to see how well your attention can zoom in on one thing and ignore the clutter around it.

How it's measured

You get 4 practice rows, then 45 seconds to get as many right as you can. Half the rows have all arrows pointing the same way, half have the middle one pointing the other way.

You get a point for each right answer. Wrong answers take a point off, so guessing doesn't help.

"Distraction cost" is how much the odd-one-out rows slowed you down: your typical time on those minus your typical time when all arrows agree. Smaller means you blocked out the others better.

Your results and history are saved in this browser. Each finished score is also sent to us anonymously (just the game, the score and whether you used a phone or a computer; no name, no account) so everyone can see how they compare. Just for fun: not a medical, IQ or hiring test.
