The startup interview process in India: rounds, timelines and what each one tests
How a typical Indian startup interview loop runs from screen to offer, how long it takes, what each round is really assessing, and how to prepare for founder rounds.

Startup loops are shorter and less standardised than at large companies. The lack of structure is the test.
The typical loop
- Screen (20–30 min, recruiter or hiring manager): fit, salary range, notice period, why this company.
- Skills round(s): a coding exercise, a take-home, a case, a portfolio review, or a pitch — depending on function. One to two rounds.
- Hiring-manager round: depth on your past work, how you'd approach their problems, what you'd do in the first 90 days.
- Founder or leadership round: values, ambition, how you handle ambiguity, whether they'd want to work with you. Often the round that decides.
- Offer, usually within days of the last round.
Elapsed time: one to three weeks at a well-run startup. Longer than four weeks means the company is either undecided about the role or slow at everything — both worth knowing.
What take-homes are for
Take-homes test whether you can do the job with no one watching. Time-box yourself to what they asked (usually 3–6 hours), write a short README on your decisions and trade-offs, and don't over-polish. Reviewers read the README first.
Founder rounds
Founders are interviewing for judgement and energy. Prepare three things: a crisp story of what you've done and why, an honest account of something that went wrong, and two questions about the business that show you've thought about it (runway, biggest risk, what "good" looks like in a year). Avoid asking about work-life balance in the founder round; ask your would-be peers instead.
After the loop
Ask for feedback if you're rejected; startups often give it. If you get an offer, take a day, read the offer checklist, and negotiate fixed pay.
