Seed vs Series A vs growth stage: which startup stage should you join?
How roles, pay, equity, risk and learning differ between pre-seed, Series A–B and growth-stage Indian startups, and how to tell which stage a company is really at.

The stage of a startup predicts your day-to-day better than its industry does.
Pre-seed and seed (under ~20 people)
You'll do three jobs, the process will be invented as you go, and the founders will sit next to you. Cash pay is lowest; equity is highest and most uncertain. Choose this for learning rate and ownership, not for pay. Ask about runway — it's often under 18 months.
Series A and B (20–200 people)
Roles specialise. There are managers, on-call rotations, a levelling framework, and usually a stated salary band. Cash pay is competitive with large companies for the same scope; equity is meaningful and the company has a plausible path to liquidity. This is where most people should start their startup career.
Growth stage (200+ people, Series C onward)
Companies like Razorpay, Meesho, Groww or CRED. Well-defined roles, strong pay, structured interviews, real ESOP buybacks. Less chaos, less ownership per person. Best if you want startup pace with big-company stability.
Telling the stage from the outside
Headcount on LinkedIn, last funding round on Tracxn or Crunchbase, whether the job posting has a level (SDE-2, PM II) and a stated range, and whether the careers page is a real ATS board or a Google Form. On this board, most roles come from Series A and later companies because those are the ones with public ATS boards; earlier-stage roles are usually the featured, paid ones.
Matching stage to your situation
Early career with low fixed costs: seed or Series A for learning. Mid-career with dependants: Series B or growth for pay and stability. Senior with a specific skill: Series A–B, where that skill changes the company's trajectory and the equity reflects it.
