How to get a product manager job at an Indian startup

How to get a product manager job at an Indian startup — what the role really involves, how the interview loop works, how pay is structured, and where the open roles are right now.

Product management is the most contested category on any startup board: fewer openings than engineering, far more applicants, and a wide gap between what the title means at different companies.

Three kinds of PM roles

Associate / APM — usually 0–3 years, often hired from analyst, engineering or consulting backgrounds. The job is execution: specs, tickets, launch checklists, working with one or two engineering pods. SpotDraft and similar SaaS companies hire here regularly.

PM / Senior PM — owns a surface or a metric. At a fintech like Razorpay or FamPay, "PM II – Ads" or "Senior PM – Payments" means you own a P&L line and are judged on numbers, not documents.

Group PM / Director / Head of Product — owns a portfolio and a team. These roles are almost always filled by referral or search; when one is posted publicly it's worth applying even if you feel under-qualified.

What the interview tests

Indian startups have mostly converged on a loop of: product sense (design a feature, critique an app), execution and metrics (what would you measure, what went wrong), a case or take-home on the company's real problem, and founder/leadership rounds. Expect at least one round to be about prioritisation under constraint — every startup PM's real job.

Bring one artefact you can talk about for 20 minutes: a launch you ran, a decision you got wrong, a metric you moved. Specificity beats polish.

Transitioning into product

The most common paths into PM at Indian startups are engineering → PM (still the most respected), analytics/data → PM, founder → PM, and consulting → PM. If you're in a service company, a side project with real users does more for you than a certificate.

Pay and equity

PM compensation at startups leans on ESOPs more than engineering does. Read the ESOP guide and ask about vesting, cliff, exercise price and what happens on exit before you weigh the equity line.
