How to get a product design job at an Indian startup

Design roles at Indian startups are scarcer than engineering or product roles and usually filled within days of posting — largely because the strong candidates are already known to the hiring team through Dribbble, Behance, Twitter or a previous company.

What "product designer" means here

At most startups it's one person doing research, flows, UI and a bit of front-end handoff. Specialist roles (UX research, motion, design systems, brand) appear at later stages — Series B and beyond — or at design-led companies. Read the posting for what they actually need: a "UI/UX Designer" posting that lists Figma, prototyping and "working with engineers" is a generalist role; one that lists user interviews, synthesis and metrics is a research-leaning role.

Your portfolio is the interview

Indian startup design loops are short: portfolio review, a whiteboard or take-home exercise, a conversation with the founder or head of product. The portfolio review decides most outcomes. Show two or three case studies with the problem, the constraints, what you tried, and what happened — with numbers if you have them. Ten polished screens with no story lose to three ugly ones with a clear decision trail.

Working with the rest of the company

Startups value designers who can talk to engineers in their language (states, edge cases, empty states, loading, errors) and to founders in theirs (conversion, retention, support tickets). Mention both in your application.

Pay

Design pay is generally a notch below engineering at the same level, with the gap closing at senior levels and at design-led companies. As with every role, the featured listings on this board must state a range — use those as anchors.
